FAQs about artificial grass maintenance
The popularity of artificial grass is booming in the UK. There was a reported growth of 220% in 2016, based on the previous year, and since lockdowns, when many people became hyper-aware of the value of creating pleasing spaces to spend time in, this has continued to increase.
But are you looking after it properly? Here are some frequently asked questions about taking care of artificial grass.
Does artificial grass require any ongoing maintenance?
Yes, but nowhere near as much as real grass. Artificial grass is low maintenance, but that doesn’t mean no maintenance. Obviously, there is no mowing or feeding to do but you should be attending to the following tasks:
- Keeping it free of surface debris such as leaves and dirt
- Removing any weeds that appear
- Removing pet faeces in a timely way
- Periodically cleaning it
Why do you need to do these jobs?
With good maintenance, you can keep your artificial grass looking good for longer and prevent it from harbouring germs and bacteria. These are the reasons why you need to do the tasks outlined above:
- Removing surface dirt and debris keeps it looking tidier and prevents particles from working their way into the fibres, which will make them look dirty and will be harder to remove later
- While artificial lawns are a much less hospitable environment for weeds, and they’re unlikely to come through from underneath the grass (if it has been installed correctly), seeds can be dropped by birds or transported on wind and take hold from the surface. Just pull them up as and when they come through but avoid harsh weed killers as this can damage the material or discolouration.
- Removing animal excrement from any surface quickly is obviously the most hygienic thing to do. Just remember that weather conditions can break it down and lead to it penetrating deep into the fibres, where germs and bacteria can develop, it will also be harder to remove the bad odours caused by waste if left.
- Cleaning it is important to remove deeper dirt and contaminants that the above methods wouldn’t cover.
Can you clean artificial grass with general household cleaners?
No. By using general cleaners such as bleach, you run the risk of damaging the material (remember, it’s essentially an outdoor carpet). You would need to use a product specifically formulated to clean it such as Cleenly’s Artificial Grass Cleaners. This will clean away everything you would expect to find on this type of surface while being kind to its fibres. What does an artificial grass cleaner do?
- Disinfects: removing germs and bacteria that may fester deep in the pile
- Cleans: removing dirt and stains as well as organisms such as mould and algae
- Deodorises: eradicating the pungent smells that artificial grass can develop from environmental exposure and animal toileting
- Fragrances: adding a pleasant smell such as fresh-cut grass or floral notes

Buy NowDoes it kill weeds?
No, it does not have the necessary active ingredients needed to kill weeds. Any visible weeds should just be pulled out. However, cleaning it can help wash away any seeds dropped before they can become established so while it does not treat them it can help to prevent them.
Is it safe to use around pets and children?
Yes, it is. However, you should keep them clear of the area as you apply it until it’s dry. Once it’s dry, it can be used straight away. It can however be harmful to aquatic life so take care around ponds.
Is it easy to use?
Yes, very. Simply dilute it to the right ratio (see instructions) and apply using a watering can or garden sprayer. Leave it to work for 15-20 minutes and then rinse away with clean water. Allow to dry and it’s ready to use again.
